DISTRICT Education Officers (DEO) in Buganda want schools under their jurisdiction to conduct their lessons and examine the pupils in Luganda.
The DEOs called for a fast implementation of the policy on compulsory teaching in local languages, as per the government white paper on education.
The DEOs from the 13 districts yesterday met at Bulange in Mengo to devise means of expediting the policy.
They were urged by the chairperson of the national Curriculum Development Centre, Geraldine Bukenya, to form district language boards to spearhead the programme.
“We have sent these documents to the minister, from which we shall come out with guidelines for the language policy in Uganda’s education. The preliminary policy is already in place, so go and tell the parents and teachers to arrange for it,” she said.
The white paper on education says the mother tongue should be used as a medium of instruction in all educational programmes up to primary 4.
The paper says English should be taught as a subject, but from P.5 onwards, it replaces Luganda as the medium of instruction.
Buganda’s minister of education, Chrisestom Muyingo, urged the DEOs to ensure the continuity of Luganda, saying if Luganda became extinct, so would the Baganda culture, norms and kingdom.
