Clamp-down on Monitor a miscalculation!

SIR— UPDF’s reaction towards the alleged “helicopter gunship crash” story leaves a lot to be desired. One thing for sure is that the army is hiding embrassing information and was caught on the wrong foot.

SIR— UPDF’s reaction towards the alleged “helicopter gunship crash” story leaves a lot to be desired. One thing for sure is that the army is hiding embrassing information and was caught on the wrong foot. It is not the reporter to prove whether the said story is true but rather the army to prove him and his sources wrong, thus making him lose credibility as a journalist. Closing the Monitor premises and arresting the journalist is a miscalculation by the army high command. The Government should not resort to ‘gangster tactics' to suppress unfavourable news. Do not use the 'barrel of the gun' to fight the 'barrel of the pen'! This is unfair play. If Uganda is a democratic society that provides for civilised procedures, through courts of law to amend any wrongs, where do we go from here?
