UNRF Wants Amin, Obote Back
By John Eremu
and Samir Voltchenko

FORGET the crimes of Joseph Kony and all his fighters. Former presidents Idi Amin Dada and Dr. Apollo Milton Obote must be returned unconditionally. General Moses Ali must be promoted.

These were some of the demands forwarded by the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRFII) to the government.

In their published agenda for peace talks, President Yoweri Museveni must also surrender four of the 20 cabinet posts, three ministers of state portfolios and a similar number in diplomatic positions, RDCs and in the public service.

UNRFII also wants two permanent positions on the UPDF High Command, and high positions in all directorates of the army, including the Chieftiancy of Military Intelligence and the external and internal security organisations.

The agenda, presented to First Deputy Prime Minister, Eriya Kategaya, yesterday, wants restrictions on political party activities lifted and a federal system of governance adopted.

Kategaya, who is also the interior minister, said the Government would study the proposals and give its position later.

“According to the peace talk agreement, government is supposed to study the agenda and afterwards meet the group and give its opinion,” Kategaya said soon after receiving the 29-page document from UNRFII chairman, Ali Bamuze.

The group broke away from the defunct West Nile Bank Front in 1997.

The rebels want Moses Ali’s rank of ‘General’ officially bestowed on him. Ali is second deputy Prime Minister.

The rebels want compensation for their arms and combatants who died during the conflict.
