A HERD of over 100 elephants from Queen Elizabeth National Park have raided Kyenjojo group farm in Kichwamba sub-county Bushenyi and destroyed 80 acres of cotton and other food plantations all valued at sh100m, a local official has said, reports Mike Nsasiirwe.

The area district councillor David Kisembo told The New Vision the incident took place on Tuesday afternoon.

Kisembo said other crops destroyed included millet, cassava and sweet potatoes.

He said it was the second attack this year. He blamed the attack on what he called laxity of the Uganda Wildlife officials whom he accused of failing to control the movement of wild animals.

Kisembo said the attacks had resulted in famine among many families.

He said the animals had affected economic activities in the area.

“The residents are likely to suffer famine throughout this season since most of their staple food and cash crops have been destroyed,” he said.

He told The New Vision that Kyenjojo Group Farm is owned by about 100 farmers and covers about 200 acres of land.
