NATIONAL champion Charlie Lubega ‘Macarena’ yesterday capped a great year with an emphatic win, but the Castrol Independence rally also brought out the names to watch out next year.
The three-time national champion clocked two hours 39.03 minutes to register his first Castrol rally victory.
Lubega (Mitsubishi Evo4) who had a largely trouble free race won nine of the 10 sections to beat second placed Dipu Ruparelia by 21 minutes in the Jinja event that again proved popular with mammoth crowds.
Lubega was happy to have his name engraved on the glittering Castrol trophy.
“The rally was well organised and I am happy to win although there should have been more competition,” said Lubega.
“Moses (Lumala) had a problem and I missed Emma Katto and Charles Muhangi.”
Lubega and co-driver Abed Musa won a one-week trip to South Africa courtesy of Castrol and South African Airways.
Dipu, who surprised many with an unusually breathtaking speed, had his navigator Isaac Rwakiseta to thank for his best performance since the 1995 Nile Rally in Jinja in which he also finished second.
“My navigator (Rwakiseta) made the biggest difference, he is more aggressive, he is just pushing you all the time,” Dipu said.
Kuku Ranjit in a Subaru Impreza settled for third position four minutes behind impressive Dipu.
Defending champion Lumala, whose Toyota Celica ST185 engine lost power, came fourth while Castrol Rally Team’s entertaining Wycliff Bukenya finished fifth.
Dipu, Arthur Blick (Toyota Supra), William Blick (Mitsubishi Evo), Andrew Kimula (Subaru Legacy) and Jinja-based veteran Dolly Mubarak showed they would feature prominently in the 2003 national championship.
Ponsiano Lwakataka, Ismail Lule, William Blick and Ben Koyesiga dropped out.
The two-day event was sponsored by Castrol Uganda with Jovenna, South African Airways, Sheraton Hotel Kampala, Dembe FM, Pepsi, DHL, WBS, IT Solutions and Fire Masters as co-sponsors.
