An old man alarmed the taxi conductor and passengers when he stopped a taxi, not to get off, but to buy the head of a cow that had just been slaughtered by the road side. The taxi was moving from Kalerwe to Gayaza when the man saw the head at an ungazetted butchery near Mpererwe.
“He shouted at the conductor to tell the driver to stop,” one of the passengers said. As soon as the vehicle came to a halt, he jumped out and hobbled towards the place where the head was displayed. To make sure that the taxi did not leave him, he left his luggage in it.
“We were stunned when we saw him lifting the bloody head and moving with it towards the taxi. He was panting by the time he reached it,” the passenger said. However, the conductor could not allow him to push it inside.
“We put it in the boot and I charge you an extra sh1,500,” the conductor told him.
“I can’t pay any more money. If you wish, let me carry it on my lap up to my destination,” the old man pleaded. He added, “This is my delicacy. It is what has kept me alive up to this age.”
Subsequently, the conductor put it in the boot free of charge. He told other passengers that the head would feed him for days. Ends
