SENIOR Presidential Advisor on AGOA Geoffrey Onegi-Obel has been named chairman of a 22-member committee to work out proposals for reforming the country’s social security sector.

The reforms shall include transforming the existing provident funds into pension schemes, the gender, labour and social development minister, Zoe Bakoko Bakoru, told journalists yesterday.

The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) is currently the main player in Uganda’s social security sector.

Bakoko announced the formation of the Social Security Sector Stakeholders Transition Group (STG) to be headed by Onegi-Obel, the NSSF board chairman.

She said one of the committee’s responsibilities was to make proposals for the reform of NSSF.

The committee dominated by government bureaucrats has four months within which to carry out its assignment.

Bakoko allayed fears that representatives of workers and employers would be marginalised on the committee.

“I do not think workers are that easy to submerge. They are the key stakeholders,” she said.
