More than 80 contestants have arrived in Nigeria for the December 7 pageant which had been overshadowed by threats of a mass boycott because of the sentencing of a Nigerian Muslim woman, Amina Lawal by a Sharia court to death for getting a baby-girl out of wedlock.
The government of President olusegun Obasanjo averted the threat by pledging that the woman would not be stoned to death for adultery.
Wu’s ambition is to become an interior designer. Nakuya, a medical doctor, has taken a year off her profession since becoming Miss Uganda in August. The contestants from the 110 participating nations were instructed to arrive this week.
The pageant was due to start on November 30, but was postponed until after the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Ends
