UGANDA’S population is likely to shoot-up to 54 million by 2025 if the growth rate stays at the current rate of 3.4% per annum

UGANDA’S population is likely to shoot-up to 54 million by 2025 if the growth rate stays at the current rate of 3.4% per annum, reports Okello Jabweli.

According to the provisional results of the 2002 census launched on Monday, Uganda’s total population now stands at 24.7 million.

The preliminary results released in October put the figure at 24.6 million.

Uganda Bureau of statistics (UBOS) executive director Dr. Male Mukasa said the new figure was arrived at by using more detailed source materials that were not available at the time the preliminary results were announced. He said the 3.4% growth rate is too high by any standards.

Kampala district with 1.2 million has the largest number of people. Mbarara is second with 1.1 million while the majority of the districts (39 out of 56) each have a population of less than 500,000 persons.

Eight districts with only 36,661 persons each have a population of less than 200,000 people.

Kampala mayor John Ssebaana Kizito contested the figure of 1.2 million, saying he wants a recount in the district.

Overall, there are 12.1 million males as compared to 12.6m females. This gives a sex ratio of 96.0 males per 100 females.

The census also revealed that the spatial population distribution in Uganda is uneven. It shows that the central region has the largest share of the population (27%) while the western and eastern regions have 26% and 25% respectively.
