THE heavy El Nino-induced rains are expected to continue pounding most parts of the country this month, climate forecasters have predicted. Torrential rains are predicted to persist upto the end of the year and in some places continue into the beginning of next year.

Abushen Majugu, the Assistant Commissioner of Meteorology, said the weather is in agreement with the seasonal forecast that was released by the department in September.

“The rains are expected to come to a climax in the last part of November for some areas while in others it will peak in December. As December progresses the rains will become less torrential and should be less intense as we enter next year,” he said.

The Nairobi-based Drought Monitoring Centre said Uganda is one of the few countries in the Greater Horn of Africa expected to receive increased rainfall. Others include Rwanda, Burundi and part of Southern Sudan.
