The First Deputy Premier and Minister for Internal Affairs, Eriya Kategaya, on Saturday set up a five-member committee to reconcile rival Kapchorwa politicians, Dr. Stephen Chebrot and Lt. Leonard Chemonges.

Nathan Etengu in Kapchorwa writes that the committee to be chaired by Mayuge resident district commissioner Toskin Bartille is to gather views from the district on how to reconcile the parties and restore political stability to the district.

Committee members include Church of Uganda Sebei bishop, Augustine Salimo, Katakwi resident district commissioner Chemaswet Ndiwa, pastor Tom Godwin Soyekwo and Ann Kasumbeyi.

Kategaya set up the committee shortly after chairing a four-hour reconciliation meeting at Sebei Elgon Cooperative Union stores, in which Chebrot and Chemonges explained the origin and gravity of their political differences.

About 200 local leaders, elders, representatives from non-governmental organisations and security officers from the district, attended the meeting.

The National Political Commissar, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, who is also a close friend of Chebrot, Col. Sula Semakula of the UPDF 3rd Division and presidential advisor, Sabila Salimo, attended the meeting at which Chebrot and Chemonges shook hands.

Sabila Salimo attended in his capacity as a member of the Chemonges camp that accused Chebrot, among others, of manipulating elections right from the Constituent Assembly in 1994.
