THE Minister of State for Regional Cooperation, Col. Kahinda Otafiire, has admitted that he supports Salim Makeera in the race for the Bukomansimbi parliamentary seat.

Three candidates including the former area MP, Hajji Lubyayi Kisiki, Salim Makeera and DP’s Maurice Kagimu Kiwanuka, are vying for the seat.

The seat fell vacant after the High Court nullified Lubyayi’s election over his academic papers. But Lubyayi said he has acquired them.

Otafiire is one of the big wigs who have reportedly visited the constituency to support Makeera.

The move has irked some Movement supporters in the constituency who say it could divide the people. Otafiire told The New Vision recently that he was free to campaign for anyone of his choice.

“They complain that I campaigned for Makeera, but I’m free to campaign for whoever I want, and with Makeera, he is also our man in the Movement and does not have problems with his academic papers,” he said.

Otafiire’s support for Makeera has reportedly irked Lubyayi’s fans.

At Buyoga trading centre in Kibinge sub-county, Otafiire allegedly joined Makeera and his fans after his nomination on November 25 and addressed a gathering.

Otafiire said the Movement had decided to back Makeera because he was an educated man.

While at a teachers’ function, Otafiire also said Makeera had chances of doing well in Parliament.
