THE UPDF has driven Joseph Kony and his Lord’s Resistance Army rebels out of Pader district and destroyed their hideouts.

They are now fleeing to Gulu district, but with the UPDF on their heels.

Security sources said yesterday the rebels were forced to drop the foodstuffs and drugs they had looted and face the threat of starvation.

The 5th Division Intelligence Officer in Pader, Capt H.U. Mukogoro, said they killed many rebels and rescued scores of abducted children from the rebels who fled in disarray towards Gulu and a few to Lira.

“The UPDF will not give the rebels a break in neighbouring Kitgum district either,” security sources said.

Meanwhile, six rebels were killed in Kitgum on Sunday,” the sources said.
A rebel sergeant and section commander were captured and four captives rescued in the same clash where two SMG guns were recovered.

Kitgum resident district commissioner Lt. Santos Okot Lapolo said the ambush was at Lugede, between Acholibur sub-county and Waa-Binen in Amido.

The UPDF 4th division spokesman, Lt. Paddy Ankunda, said the operation was carried out by the UPDF based at Gangdyang barracks in Kitgum.

He said the captured LRA commander was with the UPDF and that he was seriously injured.

Ankunda said the UPDF had so far killed 16 LRA rebels in the north in the last one week and rescued about 70 captives. Twenty-nine were rescued from Oyam.
