RESIDENTS of Ssese Islands in Kalangala district are to receive a Christmas present, reports Geoffrey Kamali.

The Government yesterday delivered its promise of a ship by signing a contract with a Dutch company to construct the long-awaited vessel at the Port Bell pier.

The contract was signed by the acting permanent secretary in the works ministry, Eng. Godfrey Lutaaya and Lorenz Winkel, Damen Shipyards’ vice-president.

Luweero state minister and Kyamuswa MP Tim Lwanga said, “I told my people that I would resign if the ship did not come. Now, I’ll be MP again.”

The vessel, estimated to cost about sh10b, will be 37 metres long, seven meters wide and will be fitted with two 1,150 horse-power engines and spare generators.

It will have the capacity to carry 120 passengers, 100 tonnes of cargo and two ice plants for fish.

Other facilities include accommodation and first and second class seating.

The ship is expected to be ready in June 2004, after 17 months.
