EMILY Nankumba had something to smile even after her school finished third in the inaugural girls’ cricket tournament that ended at Lugogo Tuesday.
Nankumba, a 16-year old senior three student of Ndejje SSS was named woman-of-the series at a prize giving ceremony at Lugogo.
Gayaza High School lifted the trophy after beating City High School by six wickets in the final.
Nankumba had an outstanding all-round performance in the British Council, WHO, NIC and SHUMUK Enterprises sponsored event.
The right hand batter scored 70 runs in five innings and picked 16 wickets for 64 runs in 25 overs.
“It is all God’s power, but we also train a lot at school, play as a team and generally keep playing,” a smiling Nankumba said.
Patience Alitubera also from Ndejje SSS scooped the best bowler award after picking 12 wickets for 65 runs in 23.5 overs.
The duo played telling roles to lead their school to victory and felt unlucky when they were knocked out to the final on net run rate.
Makerere College School’s Lydia Namirimu, Christine Aryemo and Gayaza’s Belinda Nakiganda also contested for the woman-of-series award.
The best bat award went to City High skipper Aryemo who notched 76 runs in five innings for an average of 16.5.
Fourteen-year old Naome Kayondo from Kings’ College Budo was voted youngest player while Namirimu (3 catches, five dismissals) was the best fielder.
World Health Organisation (WHO) healthy promotions officer Benjamin Sensasi graced the ceremony.
In attendance was also Victoria Kakoza, National Insurance Corporation human resource manager, and Kate Ewart from the British Council.
Sensasi promised that WHO will always give the necessary support in order to engage the girl child in active sports.
Meanwhile, the national under 17 boys squad to tour Nairobi for the ICC East Africa regional championships has stepped up drills ahead of the event.
The squad trained by Bashir Ansasira leaves tomorrow for the event that will also have Tanzania and Kenya taking part.
Uganda are the defending champions of the event after beating Kenya in the final last April here in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
