Italy gives Health sh19b
KAMPALA — The Italian government is to donate Eur10.3m (sh19b) to improve health services in eight districts in the north. The Italian Cooperation unit yesterday announced in a press release that the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had agreed to support the health sector strategic plan. It will finance government and non-government health programmes over the next three years. Part of the money will be sent to a common Poverty Alleviation Fund in the finance ministry, while another fraction will be released through UNICEF to three Italian charities.

Rebels kill Mwiri boy
PADER — A Senior five student of Busoga College Mwiri, Charles Onen, was on Saturday killed by the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels at Anga Gura in Atanga sub- county. He was returning home for holidays. Another unidentified student of Gulu High School was also reportedly killed in the same attack.

Pickpocket shot dead
KAMPALA — A pickpocket hit a dead end when the Police gunned him down on Monday. Two of his colleagues escaped. The unidentified man was part of group that grabbed a handbag from a lady on Makerere Hill Road. The lady was returning home. Kampala Police Chief Ahmed Wafuba yesterday described the incident as unfortunate. He said the pickpocket had no identity papers on him. The thugs pounced on the woman at about 7:30pm but when the Police ordered them to stop, they fled as the Police shot at them.

WFP chief takes office
KAMPALA — Arthur Holdbrook, the World Food Programme director for the newly-created East and Central Africa region, yesterday assumed office in Uganda. Holdbrook, who will oversee the operations of 11 countries in one of Africa’s most volatile regions, yesterday presented his credentials to foreign minister James Wapakhabulo, who congratulated him. The minister said Uganda was honoured to host the regional bureau. He said the Government would continue to co-operate with UN agencies.
