Why Does Lauristen Demean Us?

SIR— Niels Lauristein tried in his Sunday chess column on December 8 to give an opinion about the performance of the six youngsters in the recently concluded Chess Olympiad in Slovenia. His comments were a betrayal of the bad blood between him and Uganda chess administrators.
For those of us who followed the games from start to finish, Lauristen was a disgrace to himself.
I doubt if he has looked at the games our team played. Some were real beauties, others sheer wins snatched out of what appeared sure losses, yet others were games won or drawn because of innovation by our youngsters.
To state that only Grace Nsubuga played chess shows the great lack of insight in our current chess affairs in Uganda. I have no doubt that Grace Nsubuga, such a modest and likeable young man, would not hesitate to say that one or two of his team-mates played better than him, and that generally the performance was no worse than expected.
Personal dislikes or preferences should be kept out of public matters.
