WEST Nile members of Parliament have said the best Christmas gift for the region was the peace agreement signed between the Government and Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF II) at Yumbe on Tuesday.
The MPs led by Second Deputy Premier and minister for disaster preparedness and Refugees, Brig. Moses Ali, said they were happy the Government and UNRF II rebels followed the right way of resolving conflicts.
The MPs, who included the Attorney General, Francis Ayume, were expressing their support to the parties for signing the agreement.
They were speaking during a talk-show on Arua One FM station.
Other MPs were Jacan Omach (Jonam), Anim Angupale (Arua), Nasur Okuti (Arua Municipality), Jeska Eriya (Adjumani), Alonga Othman (Aringa), Nusura Tiperu (Yumbe) and Alex Onzima (Maracha).
“The best Christmas gift for the people of West Nile is the peace agreement signed between the Government of Uganda and our brothers, UNRF II, to end the war. We are grateful to these people because we shall have a happy Christmas,” Ayume said on behalf of the MPs.
“On behalf of the people of West Nile, I would like to commend the Government for allowing UNRF II to come home and negotiate for peace. This is a way forward to bring total peace, security and development in the region,” Ali said.
He said the peace agreement was a landmark and an example to the rest of Uganda that peace negotiations can work to resolve conflicts.
The MPs called upon the people of West Nile to disassociate themselves from those who will want to wage war against the Government.
“We are calling on our people of West Nile not to accept rebellion in the region because there are rumours that there are some people organising to attack us from Congo. Please don’t give them room,” Yumbe Woman MP Nusura Tiperu warned.
