MUKONO district councillors have resolved to petition President Yoweri Museveni over the LC5 chairmanship saga to enable the district concentrate on its programmes.

The councillors on Friday resolved to initiate reconciliatory talks between Francis Lukooya and Godfrey Ddamulira Kyeyune.

They want one candidate to step down ahead of the February 2003 bye-elections.

The two are aspiring for the LC5 chair, which fell vacant in November when the former chairman Joseph Kanakulya Banga (pictured) lost a petition in the court of appeal. It was filed by Francis Lukooya.

Kyeyune, a vice chairperson to Banga, took over as the acting chairperson. The Electoral Commission has fixed nominations for January 6-7, 2003.

The councillors said since Lukooya and Ddamulira were both Movement supporters, it would be appropriate for Museveni to bring them together.

They hailed Dr. Lulume Bayiga, a staunch multi- partyist, who recently withdrew from the race in favour of Ddamulira Kyeyune.
