TWO parish chiefs in Arua have been arrested by the Police in connection with a missing voters' register and a booklet for registration of fresh voters and transfers.

The books belonged to Katiku polling station, Bileafe sub-county, Terego, Arua, Mr. Robert Chagara, the Electoral Commission registrar in-charge of Arua and the new Yumbe district, told journalists last week that those arrested are the parish chief of Aripi, Mr. Wilcox Injiku and acting parish chief of Katiku, Mr. Erinasio Abiti. Chagara, who was giving the report about the update and cleaning of the voters register, said other suspects were on the run. Chagara, who is assisted by Rose Ayaka, said other problems his office encountered during the exercise, which ran from January 11-13, 2001 included insufficient electoral materials and staff to cover Arua and Yumbe's eight electoral areas. On the total number of voters registered, Chagara said during the referendum, there were 356,909 voters, adding that the number could go up to 400,000. Ends.
