By Davis Joseph Weddi KAMPALA City Engineer Abraham Byandaala has said Parliament Avenue is to be re-opened soon following the relocation of the American Embassy which had placed barricades on the road. Byandaala did not specify when the road would be opened but said the huge concrete blocks placed on the road would be removed by the American embassy which last week announced its relocation to new premises along Ggaba road. However, Byandaala, said the British High Commission had asked for some of the barricades to remain, especially at the entrances to the IPS building and the High Commission building which has been sharing a gate with the American embassy. American embassy spokesperson Mary Jeffers declined to comment but referred The New Vision to the British High Commission and KCC. However, the British High Commission yesterday also declined to comment on the development. "We do not comment on security matters," said the High Commission's spokesman. Heavy concrete slabs were placed along the avenue in 1998, following terrorist bomb attacks on the American embassies in Nairobi and Dar-es-Salaam. By Monday, American Embassy security personnel in blue uniform were still manning checkpoints on the section of Parliament Avenue between IPS building and Farmers House. Ends
