NEW entrants Mirembe Primary School on Saturday shocked many when they held the lead in the Mini-hockey league at Lugogo ground.

The junior players of Mirembe PS who made their first appearance on the hockey scene eliminated table leaders Green Hill academy 2-0 before beating Bright Day 2-1. The juniors who look set to win the six-week tournament also whipped City Parents 3-0 in the Under-10 category. Green Hill's Under-10 beat City Parents 9-1 as their seniors the Under-12 team fell 9-0 to Naguru Infants School. Green Hill, the defending champions, kept up with the pace and have raised nine points in five matches so far played. Naguru Infants and East Kololo also made come backs when they beat Green Hill's Under-12 and Police children 9-0 and 4-2 goals respectively. In other thrilling games, Lohana Academy fell prey to Naguru Katale, going down 5-1 as City Parents were held 2-2 by Kampala Parents. Kabira International fell 1-5 to Kibuli Demonstration as Lohana fell 3-0 to Kampala Parents. The competition set to last six weeks and organised by Uganda Hockey Association (UHA) has attracted over 250 primary school players from over 13 schools in the country. UHA general secretary Chris James said the competition is being held as part of hockey's International Year of the Youth. James said the gala is mainly aimed at developing hockey talent among juniors. Each match is composed of two halves of 12.5 minutes. One hundred ninety six goals have so far been scored at a rate of five goals per game. Ends
