Another bomb detonated at Kampala Casino By Alfred Wasike A "HIGHLY lethal" homemade bomb was yesterday detonated by police in Kasangati-Kyankima village, off Kampala-Gayaza road. Terrified residents scampered for cover when the bomb, which had been concealed in an aluminium Britannia biscuit container, was detonated by the Police Bomb Squad at about 8.00am. Two police dogs were used to sniff and confirm that there were explosives. The police at Kasangati described the bomb as "highly lethal". They confirmed it was "planted" in the home of a Kampala businessman, Emanuel Kavuma. Kavuma's house, on Nakigoye Road, is surrounded by a short mistle-toe hedge without a gate. A visibly-shaken Kavuma, a trader in the city's Nabugabo business area, said he returned home with his wife at about 10.00pm and packed their car beside their bedroom window. "I woke up at 5.00am to check on the car which was packed just outside our bedroom window. I saw a tin near the car. The tin was covered with part of the hedge, yams and black plastic bags. At first I thought a mad person or a nightdancer had visited us," Kavuma said. "I rang the Nangabo LC3 chairman, Kizza Seninde, my brother David and the police. There were wires leading to the car. My wife said it might be a bomb. The police brought dogs. I suspect it was meant to explode if I turned on the car's ignition," he added. On the motive of planting the bomb at his home, Kavuma said, "The chairman (Seninde) and I are some of President Museveni's supporters. This bomb might be a result of political differences, may be here or at Nabugabo where I work. But we leave it to the police to investigate and tell us." Meanwhile, the anti-terrorism unit detonated another home-made bomb at Kampala Casino last night, report Davis Weddi and A. G Musamali. The bomb was discovered by the special-hire drivers who park in front of the casino on Kimathi Avenue. The bomb was hidden in a tree on the pavement. The drivers informed the security at the casino, whose managing director, Bob Kabonero, called in the anti-terrorism unit based at the Chieftaincy of Military Intelligence. The unit came with a robot to detonate the bomb that went off in a big explosion at about 8:00pm. The police said the bomb had a timing device and they suspected it had been set to go off later that night during the busier hours. Ends
