MAKERERE University has beefed up security at the campus to ensure safety of the students.

The University spokesman, Mr. Muhwezi Murari, said, "Following last year's murder incidences at the University, the administration has beefed up security to ensure that students are safe." Muhwezi said they had acquired a patrol vehicle, retrained the guards, acquired radio communication systems and are in the process of recruiting more guards." "Now we have what it takes to ensure that there is tight security at the university," he said. Muhwezi also said the university administration was working together with the police to ensure security at the university. The move comes a few days after university students returned for the new semester. The semester began on March 10 but most of the students have not yet returned to the university. About five Makerere University students were murdered last year by unknown gunmen in and around the university premises. There have also been reports of girls being raped and assaulted around on campus. The recent victim, Alex Adiga, was killed in December outside Mary Stuart hall sparking off a violent demonstration by students who demanded for improvement in security at the campus. Ends
