Health sets up malaria centres

The Ministry of Health has set up eight surveillance centres in different regions of the country to monitor malaria drug resistance among patients, an official with the ministry's Malaria Control Programme has said.

By Vision Reporter The Ministry of Health has set up eight surveillance centres in different regions of the country to monitor malaria drug resistance among patients, an official with the ministry's Malaria Control Programme has said. Dr Frederick Kato, the programme's acting head, said in an interview yesterday ahead of the Africa Malaria Week April 20, that the sentinel centres will carry out research and monitor different drug-responses among patients in areas hardest hit by malaria. The centres are located in Rukungiri, Kabarole, Jinja, Arua, Apac, Moroto, Kampala and Mbale, and are part of a regional network of 24 sentinel centres to monitor malaria drug resistance in Sub Saharan Africa. Other centres are in Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda. Ends
