By Okello Jabweli Presidents Yoweri Museveni, Daniel arap Moi of Kenya, and Benjamin Mkapa of Tanzania are today expected to endorse the nomination of public service minister Amanya Mushega as the new East African Community (EAC) Secretary-general. EAC spokesman Alot Magaga said the presidents will also launch the second five-year EAC Development Strategy in Arusha, Tanzania. "Mr. Mushega was nominated by President Museveni and he is likely to approved as the next secretary-general tomorrow," Magaga said. Mushega's nomination follows the expiry of the five-year mandate of Kenya's Francis Muthaura. According to the EAC Charter, member states are supposed to nominate secretary-generals and deputy secretary-generals on a rotational basis. Magaga told The New Vision that the summit is also expected to approve Kenya's Dr. Kipyegon Cheluget as deputy secretary-general. He said the EAC council of ministers considered Kipyegon's nomination and resolved to forward it to the Heads of State Summit for approval. Magaga said Mushega's nomination was not discussed by the council of ministers as the appointment of a secretary-general is the preserve of the heads of State. Ends
