JOHANNESBURG - TP Mazembe Englebert revived hopes of a return to former glories with an African Champions League win on Sunday in the stadium where 10 people died in a stampede just a fortnight earlier. The Congolese club beat highly fancied Raja Casablanca of Morocco 2-0 at the stadium in the southern city of Lubumbashi, where a stampede at Mazembe's last game caused by the firing of teargas into an unruly crowd led to 10 deaths. Mazembe, won the old Champions Cup twice in the late 1960s. Raja were one of several fancied sides to struggle in the Champions League second round, first leg matches. Nigerian champions Julius Berger, seeking to end the giant west African country's dearth of success in the continent's leading club competition, lost to an Andrew Mukasa goal at SC Villa of Uganda in Kampala on Saturday. The victory improved their chances of becoming the first club from Uganda to qualify for the Champions League proper since it was launched in 1997.
