Colin Powell, Museveni To Discuss Congo

US Secretary of State General Colin Powell will discuss with President Yoweri Museveni issues relating to the Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo during his visit to Uganda on Sunday.

By John Kakande US Secretary of State General Colin Powell will discuss with President Yoweri Museveni issues relating to the Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo during his visit to Uganda on Sunday. US acting Assistant Secretary for African Affairs Nancy Powell said at a press briefing that Secretary Powell will "be looking at the Sudan and also the Congo situation" during his visit to Eastern Africa. Nancy said the Secretary of State would arrive in Uganda on Sunday from Kenya and leave on Monday morning for Europe. According to a statement issued by the US State Department in Washington, Powell will hold discussions with Presidents Museveni, Daniel arap Moi of Kenya, Thabo Mbeki of South Africa and Konare of Mali during his first trip to Africa. "The Secretary's trip has a number of objectives, including primarily to illustrate the engagement of this administration and the Secretary personally in Africa and Africa policy," the statement said. Powell has already spoken with Presidents Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Joseph Kabila of Congo and Olusegun Obasanjo of Nigeria. She said Powell intends to discuss with Mbeki the situation in Zimbabwe and Congo. Nancy Powell, who previously served as US ambassador in Kampala, said Colin Powell will "have an opportunity to assess some of the changes that are occurring in Africa." He also wants to see how implementation of the African Growth and Opportunity Act is going on in Africa. Ends
