By Ali Mao THE government has earmarked sh3b for Lira district for the implementation of youth and women projects, the minister in the vice president's office, Mrs. Betty Okwir has said. Okwir also woman member of parliament for Lira district was briefing the press on government programmes for the district at Garden Inn in Lira town on Thursday. She said the money is part of the government programme to eradicate the rampant poverty among the youth and women by empowering them economically. Okwir said the money would be used as a revolving fund for the beneficiaries. She said Lira is one of the districts which has greatly benefited and enjoyed the facilities from the movement government through decentralisation and the entandikwa loan scheme. Okwir, who is seeking re-election to represent the women of Lira district in parliament said she is contesting for her last term. "I want to retire from active politics and pave way for others to substitute me," she added. Okwir hailed her rivals saying they are eligible and competent to contest for the seat. "I am encouraging them to come and challenge me instead of stepping down for somebody's interest. But I am very sure I will beat them flat," she said. "It is good they have exposed themselves early enough. This will give me time to select and groom a successor and I shall ask my electorate to help me identify a competent successor," Okwir said.
