By Samson Opus KAKAMEGA proved Kenyan volleyball is still supreme in the region when they easily snatched the Aporu Memorial title in Kumi on Sunday. The straight sets victory in the final by the Kenyan Prisons side ended the three-year dominance of the event by KAVC. The sharp spiking pair of Elijah Gitaaiga and Caris Chesaina proved too much for the Ugandan champions to handle. The Kenyans secured the title with an easy 25-17, 25-19, 25-20 score. KAVC chairman Robert Masaba attributed their loss to poor preparations. "Our only biggest problem was that we did not train enough as a team," Masaba said. "I think we were also affected by uncertainty because of lack of funds but definitely we shall reclaim the cup next year," he added. KCC retained the title in the womens category after overcoming fellow Ugandans KAVC A 2-1 in the crucial round robbin game. Their performance was the best among four teams that included Mukumu Girls (Kenya) and KAVC B. Wiggins Primary school proved superior in their category, claiming both the girl's and boy's titles. Mukumu girls retained the post-primary title by beating Kenyan compatriots Uyete while Bugema Adventist SS of Luwero reigned in the boy's category. Many teams skipped the event at Kumi Boma grounds at the weekend to concentrate on preparations for the East and Central Africa Volleyball Confederation junior championship due on June 24-30 in Nairobi. The tournament is played in memory of Dr. Aporu Okol, the former patron of the Uganda Volleyball Federation. Ends
