ANNUAL contributions of the East African Community (EAC) member states have been increased, the EAC Secretary General, Amanya Mushega, said on Tuesday.

By Charles Wendo in Geneva ANNUAL contributions of the East African Community (EAC) member states have been increased, the EAC Secretary General, Amanya Mushega, said on Tuesday. Mushega said each member state would pay over US$1m this financial year, an increment from about US$700,000 last year. He was speaking to The New Vision at the United Nations palace in Geneva, Switzerland during the first International Consortium for Cooperation on the Nile (ICCON1). The ICCON is a congregation of Nile Basin countries, donors and other partners in development. Mushega said the increment in the payment is "because the community has expanded its operations." He said all the member states are up-to-date on their payments but did not reveal what each state paid. "The community is supported by contributions from the three partner states. All have paid for the last financial year band we are happy," he said. The EAC member states are Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. In recent years Rwanda has expressed interest to join the community. Mushega said the EAC had a stake in the shared waters of Lake Victoria which falls under the Nile Basin. He said the EAC member countries should always reach a common position to present to other Nile Basin countries. They include Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burundi, Sudan, Ethiopia, Egypt and Eritrea. Ends
