THE visiting Sudanese Police Chief and chairman of East African Police Chiefs Conference (EAPCO) Lt. Gen. Elhaji Omar Hidairi, has attributed Uganda's poor security situation to weak laws. Abubaker Mukose reports that Hidairi said Uganda was highly infiltrated by drug trafficking because its laws are friendly to offenders. Hidairi, who first visited Kigali, arrived in Uganda on Tuesday evening. He said Uganda had several opportunities to benefit from Sudan especially in training police personnel at the Sudanese Police Academy. Hidairi's visit is a follow-up of the EAPCO resolutions meeting held in Sudan last year. He said EAPCO member states needed to strengthen salient laws especially on arms and drug trafficking to curb crime. Hidairi said this in a meeting with the security officials before visiting the source of the Nile and Bujagali Falls in Jinja. "Creation of an information data bank especially on capital criminal cases would help member states harmonise the laws," Hidairi said. The director of the East Africa Interpol Bureau, Mr. Peter Kimundi and the Sudanese Interpol officer, Brig. Mohamed Manaan, accompanied him. They were escorted to Jinja by the Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala.
