AUTOMOBILE Association of Uganda (AAU) president Roger Ddungu has sent a report on Caltex driver Moses Lumala to State House.
Ddungu said the driver’s decision not to accept an offer of Shell products at the Helix rally prize-giving last month showed that the sport is being mismanaged. In a July 12 letter to president Yoweri Museveni, Ddungu said the Shell Helix rally winner contravened international rules.
“The most recent and shameful incident during the prize award ceremony is a glaring example of bad times in motor sport. At this function rally drivers sponsored by oil companies other than Shell declined trophies and oil products offered by Shell contrary to international rules,†Ddungu said.
Ddungu said: “All oil company guests were grossly embarrassed, such flaws are caused by clubs which are now organising motor rallies under friendly terms.â€
Lumala, sponsored by Caltex, picked the main prize which is a floating trophy and certificate, but declined to take the oil.
National champion Charlie Lubega, sponsored by TOTAL, together with Lumala declined an offer of free fuel given by Shell at the launch.
Ddungu appealed to president Museveni to adopt, a new body Motor Sport Uganda (MOSU) and its constitution which he copied to him, arguing that it will put the wrangles to rest.
“We in AAU, the holders of FIA sporting powers have no objection to delegating the same powers to MOSU,†he said.
Newly appointed Sports state minister, Henry Oryem Okello early this week promised to clean up motorsport.
Meanwhile Herbert ‘Fatso’ Lubega has entered the Simba FM sprint bringing the number of drivers at the event due tomorrow at Garuga to 15.
The sprint sponsored by Radio Simba FM is organised by Royal Motor Club and starts at 10.30am.
