By Vision Reporter KAMPALA University directors yesterday accused former Greenland Bank boss, Dr. Sulaiman Kiggundu, of teaming up with Hajji Hassan Basajjabalaba to buy their property. Prof. Badru Kateregga, the university vice-chancellor, said his administration and students were now suffering due to ‘crimes’ Kiggundu committed as an individual. Kateregga was reacting to the July 27 sale of Kampala University premises and plots at Kansanga to Haba Group Ltd., which belongs to Basajjabalaba. Addressing a press conference at Hotel Africana, Kampala, Kateregga said in 1998, Kiggundu took a sh970m loan from Uganda Commercial Bank (UCB) purportedly to complete civil works, buy books and computers for the university. “But no civil works were done. The books and computers were never bought. Instead, Kiggundu took the money and nothing was documented. He is now using the money he got to buy property together with Basajjabalaba and Hajji Abbas Kangave,” Kateregga said. “It is unfortunate that Bank of Uganda (BOU) which refused our proposal for repaying the loan, is now rewarding Kiggundu by selling him the property through Habo Group Ltd. This is simply because there is a kick-back in the deal,” said Kateregga. Kaddu Kiberu, one of the university directors, attended the press conference. Kateregga lashed out at BOU officials, saying they were now dealing with Kiggundu yet he was implicated in the defunct Greenland Bank mismanagement. Ends
