By Chris Osekeny and Edris Kisambira STUDENTS at St. Elizabeth Girls Secondary School Kidotek in Soroti district went on strike on Friday, citing opening of their mail by the school administration. The girls, who were armed with sticks, iron bars and stones, damaged a lot of school property and forced the teachers to flee, the headmaster, Felix Oryokot, said. All students, including those in S4 who have been doing their Mock exams, were suspended and the school closed. A number of schools in the north have gone on strike in the last one month. At Sir Samuel Baker SSS, the students went on strike after a teacher eloped with a girl. At Unyama National Teachers College, the students rioted after an increase in school fees, prompting the millitary police to step in. The girls said they were being fed on rotten posho and beans daily. They were also bitter about the poor health and sanitary conditions, citing lack of toilets and bathrooms. Ends
