By William Muwonge Western 2909 Buganda 2926 Eastern 2933 Northern 2977 WESTERN, the most successful team in the Inter-regional golf tournament, went a step better by extending their record to seven wins yesterday. Consistency and teamwork were the hallmark of the Western’s triumph in the 36-hole event at the Kitante course. The team captain John Carvalho attributed the victory to a disciplined and controlled approach. “Our strategy for a controlled approach on the second 18 worked,” an ecstatic Carvalho said. “A decision was made not to press too hard when faced with a difficult situation.” Western region also produced the 14th edition’s best player, George Olayo playing off handicap 6. The 30-year old Entebbe club golfer carded a career best 64 nett yesterday, having posted 71 the day before. Olayo whose form greatly tilted the game in the team’s favour, sunk birdies on number 10, 11 and 13. “The challenge was so big, but I am happy to do something for my team,” Olayo said. Buganda, who produced a brilliant form on first 18, lost the title after key player Kim crumbled yesterday after a good start. Kim carded 82 yesterday having brought 67 on Saturday. The champions rose from second position after the first 18 to win overtaking Buganda. Eastern, the only team yet to win the annual show, improved to third position from fourth last year. Northern, five-time champions who were also highly favoured to take the title came last. *************************** By William Muwonge THE 36-hole Inter-regional tournament ended yesterday with contrasting fortunes for the four rivals. Before start of action, the teams had vowed to outwit each other for the top prize of the Kampala Casino sponsored show. Every team captain talked of having assembled a dream team and that nothing could stand in their way for the title. After two days of skill, stamina and endurance, each team got what it worked for. Western claimed victory for a record seventh title. The new champions denied last year’s champions Buganda a third title. Eastern region will have to wait a little longer to win their first title having again failed to do so. The biggest disappointment was Northern, the five time champions and title favourities who for the first time in the history of the 13-old old event launched in 1988 came last.
