By Tonny Langalanga NINETEEN guns have been recovered from thugs in Gulu Municipality this month, the Gulu Resident District Commissioner, Musa Ecweru, has said. He told The New Vision on Friday that recent operations by the UPDF the Police, and local council defence systems in Gulu municipality, led to successful recovery of guns from thugs. Ecweru was speaking during the closure of the para-legal training workshop organised by the Human Rights Focus, in Gulu. The workshop was sponsored by Foundation for Human rights of Sweden. The workshop drew 16 participants from Bobi, Lakwana, Lalogi, Odek and Ongako subcounties in Omoro county, Gulu district who were trained and awarded certificates. Ecweru said some of the worst human rights abuses occur in Gulu particularly involving children and women. “It is unfortunate that the victims whose rights are violated don’t know that their rights are abused, and even those who abuse their rights don’t know what human rights are,” Ecweru said. He said it was time to take action against human rights abuse and bring peace to Acholi. Ecweru said people should be educated about their rights to enable them protect themselves. He urged the Police and other law enforcers not to downplay the intensity of crimes. He said even in defilement cases which carries capital punishment, parents tend to compromise with the defilers, and this allows them to escape the law. Ecweru told them to avoid bribes, and ensure that justice was done.
