FOUR other policemen were yesterday arrested in connection with the Thursday shooting dead of a woman during an eviction exercise at Kabalagala a Kampala suburb, write Eva Nabagesera & Annette Kezaabu. Corporal Peter Okom and three others whose identity could not be established yesterday, were arrested and charged with indiscipline. The officer in-charge of Kabalagala Police Station, Faustine Esamu, told The New Vision that, “They were arrested and charged by the department for poor conduct. “It was not necessary for them to shoot and their actions caused a lot of chaos. They will be punished internally,” Esamu said. He said Jaffer Sewati who was arrested over the murder of one of the tenants, Harriet Nabakooza, was going to be examined by the Police surgeon on Monday. Esamu denied reports that the Police were also planning to arrest the court bailiffs because they had not received the authority to evict the tenants from the area LCs. Nabakooza was hit while trying to protect her daughter from the gunfire. The newly-evicted residents took her body to Kabalagala Police Station where they demanded for fuel to take it for burial. “The people said it was their (Police) lack of discipline that led to her death and demanded that they provide transport to take the body to Masaka,” a source said. The DPC Katwe Police Station, Tembo Saleh said the Police in the area were going to beef up the patrol squad so as to efficiently guard the property of the evicted people. Over 30 houses were demolished in the exercise, leaving over 100 people homeless. Ends
