Kawuma heads Africa meet team

UGANDA Chess Federation (UCF) has picked on-form national junior champion Stephen Kawuma and two ladies to represent Uganda in the All Africa Chess championship in Cairo, Egypt September 16-26.

By Douglas Mazune and Moses Nampala UGANDA Chess Federation (UCF) has picked on-form national junior champion Stephen Kawuma and two ladies to represent Uganda in the All Africa Chess championship in Cairo, Egypt September 16-26. Catherine Namutebi and Juliet Nakandi will make the trip with Kawuma for the continental tournament that will see the top six men and three women represent Africa in the World Chess championship in Greece early next year. UCF boss Dan Nsibambi said the Ugandans are capable of making it to the world championship. Kawuma will earn $750 (sh1.3m) and the ladies will bag $200 (sh0.35m) each as appearance fees in the prestigious tournament that will draw top players in Africa. The winner of the men’s category will take home $4000 (sh7m) while a women champion will earn $1800 (sh3.1m). Meanwhile league champions URA hammered Mulago 3.5 - 0.5 while UCB also made easy work of Bombo 3-1 in the national chess league on Sunday. The league continues this Sunday at various venues. r Busoga College Mwiri on Saturday emerged winners of this year’s national post-primary schools Father Grimes chess tournament with 28 points after beating St Mary’s College Kisubi in the final round. Mwiri hosted the Macmillan sponsored tournament that attracted eight schools. Ndejje were runners up on 23 points, Entebbe third with 19.5 points. Jinja trailed in fourth place with 19 points. Aron Kanabi of Ndejje was named the best board player in the boys category and Christine Nanyonga of Luweero Vocational SS the girls category best. ends
