By Emmanuel Mulondo and Steven Candia THERE have been mixed reactions in Toro Kingdom and Fort-Portal town over the death sentence against former Toro Premier, John Sanyu Katuramu (pictured). Katuramu was convicted of murdering Prince Happy Kijanangoma and a guard, Stephen Kaganda, on March 25, 1999 in Fort Portal. Justice J. B Katutsi on Wednesday convicted Katuramu together with his nephew Patrick Kwezi and Alex Twinomugisha, a former UPDF soldier. The Toro Kingdom acting Premier, Stephen Nyabongo Rwakijuma, said the verdict was unfortunate but “we can not help it since it is the decision of the court.” “To the subjects, they just have to be calm and we see how we can forge ahead,” he said. The head of Toro’s royal clan, Charles Kamurasi, said, “ It is a pity that the man has been condemned to death but if the law has proved him guilty, then the law has taken its course.” The mayor of Fort Portal, Bob Kaganda said, “We have to go by the ruling of the court but it is unfortunate because the man was instrumental in the development of the kingdom.” He said they were looking for a fairer verdict on appeal in higher courts. “We must respect the rule of law,” he said. Bishop Paul Kalanda, Sheikh Abbib Mande and Bishop Yustus Kamanyire, were not readily available for comment. Other residents said Katuramu should hang for such a heinous offence. Ends
