Government Hails Lake Victoria Aid

THE Government has thanked the World Bank (WB) for and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Trust Fund for the US$70m (about sh126b) for the Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project (LVEMP).

By Kezio Musoke THE Government has thanked the World Bank (WB) for and the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Trust Fund for the US$70m (about sh126b) for the Lake Victoria Environmental Management Project (LVEMP). The Minister of Water, Lands and Environment, Ruhakana Rugunda on Monday said the US$35m each which the GEF and the WB had provided in form of grant and credit respectively, had gone a long way in achieving the East African Community’s objectives towards the LVEMP. Rugunda’s statement was read by the state minister for water, Mrs Maria Mutagamba, during the opening of the first regional, National Scientific Conference on the findings of LVEMP. The National Executive Secretary of LVEMP, Dr. F. L Orach-Meza, told The New Vision LVEMP was a comprehensive regional environmental development programme being implemented and partially funded by the community. “The National Scientific Conference is to discuss the findings and achievements that have resulted from the last four years of implementing the activities of LVEMP,” he said. He said LVEMP’s objective was to restore a healthy, varied ecosystem of Lake Victoria. Ends
