By John Eremu THE Joint Admissions Board on Monday started selection of students to tertiary institutions with a strong warning against admission of students outside the new ministry guidelines. The warning was made by the state minister for higher education, Ms. Betty Akech during the on-going selection exercise at Makerere University. She said only students with two principal passes at “A” level should be enrolled for arts courses while at least a principle pass and two subsidiaries for science courses. “The ministry will not hesitate to discontinue any candidate who is admitted outside these guidelines,” she warned. Akech said the academic year for tertiary institutions opens October 15. She confirmed that the abolition of cost sharing in tertiary institutions will take effect this term though students on state scholarships will still have to pay for caution money, identity cards and charges for the guild and the Uganda National Students’ Association. Akech said the state will sponsor 80% of students admitted to national teachers’ colleges, 30% in cooperatives, hotel training institutions and Uganda colleges of commerce. The Government will sponsor 40% in paramedical and agricultural colleges. Ends
