By Nicholas Kajoba Kabaka Ronald Mutebi will officially launch the community service (bulungi bwansi) tree planting programme in Buganda on Wednesday at Seeta-Namuganga, Mukono district. The programme is one of the Mengo government’s initiative to fight poverty under the Buganda ten-year development plan. Mengo’s minister for community service Sewava Serubiri said on Thursday at Nakifuma community centre hall that over 5,000 eucalyptus trees will be planted in the area. Sewava met the steering committee led by the district speaker, Al-Hajji Edirisa Njuki, and resolved that over 50 acres of land in the area will be planted with trees. “Kabaka Ronald Mutebi will officially launch the tree planting programme in Buganda and over 5,000 trees are expected to be planted on that day,” he said. The tentative programme begins today with seminars at different sub-counties conducted by the Mengo government for two days. Sewava said the trees will be planted on Kabaka’s land to help the indigenous people fight desertification. He said Baganda should develop a culture of planting trees so that other tribes can admire them and start doing the same, to make the whole Uganda green. He warned them against cutting trees saying this could cause serious environmental degradation in the region.
