By Nathan Etengu A TOTAL of 30 UPDF cadet trainees, eight of them university graduates, were yesterday recruited in Mbale for the course that begins today at the School of Infantry, Jinja. The recruits were part of the 1,000 that successfully completed a rigorous interview conducted throughout Uganda. The seven women who turned up for recruitment in Mbale, including a secretary at the UPDF military barracks, failed the written interview. The UPDF 3rd Division Commander, Col. Geoffrey Taban, and Mbale resident district commissioner Hassan Wasswa Galiwango witnessed the recruitment. Lt. Col. Lorot, whose team carried out the recruitment in eastern and north-eastern Uganda, said the turn-up was good. “There was much enthusiasm shown by the candidates who turned up for the exercise,” Lorot said. He said the number of people willing to join the cadet course was overwhelming. Lorot said only two ladies joined the cadet trainees in the districts he covered. “Only two ladies qualified from Sironko,” Lorot said, adding that the ladies beat all the boys in the written examinations. Lorot said some of the candidates, including graduates, failed the current affairs tests. “Some of them could not even name 10 cabinet ministers while others failed to answer the simple question on the three arms of government,” he said. One candidate said the three arms of government were AK-47 guns, Rocket Propelled Grenades and an Armoured Personnel Carrier. Some candidates failed to name any 10 heads of state in Africa. Ends
