Yiga fails to shine

UGANDA finished 14th overall in the World Half Marathon championship that ended yesterday in the west England seaport of Bristol.

By Norman Katende UGANDA finished 14th overall in the World Half Marathon championship that ended yesterday in the west England seaport of Bristol. Ethiopia’s Haile Gebrselassie, who clocked his personal best of 1:00:03 and is four time world 10,000 gold medallist and world record holder over the 10,000 and 5,000, won the tight race on his debut. Paul Wakou was leading at the 5Km (14:35 min) mark in 41st position but stamina was against his will as his country mate Francis Yiga overtook him as they approached the finishing line to finish in 35th position. Yiga clocked 1hour, 02 minutes, 03seconds behind Gebrselassie. Wakou finished five seconds after, in 36th position while the third Ugandan Joseph Nsubuga clocked 1:05.01 to finish in 76th position. The team was supposed to have 4 athletes but Ronald Mujuni was dropped at last minute due to financial constraints.
