A MASINDI farmer has sued Kinyara Sugar Works Company for allegedly leaving his 189 tons of cut sugarcane to waste.

By Jovita Ajuna A MASINDI farmer has sued Kinyara Sugar Works Company for allegedly leaving his 189 tons of cut sugarcane to waste. He is demanding for sh6m from the company as compensation. Ephraim Bagonza of Bujenje village, in a civil suit filed in the commercial court, said on July 25 1996 he signed a sugarcane production contract with the company under the outgrowers’ scheme. According to the contract, he was to grow sugarcane on his 2.7 hectares of land and the company undertook to purchase the sugar cane. The company was also to harvest the sugarcane and transport it to the factory for processing into sugar. in March 1998, the company workers allegedly went to Bagonza’s sugar cane plantation and cut approximately 411-tons of sugarcane, but only transported 222 to the factory for processing. Over 180 tons were abandoned in the plantation. Bagonza is seeking general damages of sh6,714,700 for breach of contract, costs of the suit and 26% interest per annum.
