Kabale reaps big from pyrethrum

By Hanington Mbabazi KABALE district farmers in the counties of Ndorwa, Rukiga and Rubanda earned sh243m from pyrethrum last year. This was contained in the pyrethrum production and processing review report for the year 2000, released recently by Mr. Oweka, the general manager, Agro-Management Uganda Limited. In his report, farmers in Rukiga county fetched the highest amount of sh95m out of the 18.5 tons of pyrethrum produced from the 365 acres prepared by 86 groups of farmers and 285 individuals. Rubanda west earned sh70m from 16.2 tons of the 202 acres while Rubanda East and Ndorwa fetched sh42m and sh36m out of the 158 acres and 164 acres, respectively. Oweka further revealed that pyrethrum is also grown Kasese and Kabarole districts. He said that farmers in Kasese fetched sh53m from their 155 acres while Kabarole farmers reaped sh47m from 110 acres. By last year, the price of pyrethrum per kilogramme was at sh2000 and this has increased to sh2700 this year, making it one of the highest priced crops in the country. The price is reviewed periodically as an incentive and farmers in Mbarara and Kisoro districts have also shown interests in pyrethrum growing as a supplementary cash earner. ends
