By Moses Nampala THE Police in Iganga arrested two people, including a UPDF soldier on Monday and recovered a firearm after a fire exchange. Business in Iganga town came to a halt as gunshots rocked the town when the duo engaged Police in a shoot-out. The officer in-charge Criminal Investigation Department, Moses Mpanuka, identified the suspects as Private Godfrey Baruza of UPDF detachment at Nalufenya in Jinja and Geofrey Mawanda, a driver of commuter taxi. The duo, armed with a gun allegedly sought entrance into Iganga taxi park wanting to load passengers onto taxis. But authorities at the taxi park resisted them. A stampede reportedly ensued when the soldier fired in the air several times, attracting the attention of Iganga Police. The CID boss said the soldier opened fire at a group of armed detectives who had been dispatched at the park to calm the situation. “The suspects who attempted to escape in a commuter taxi, had engaged Police in a two kilometre chase, but were intercepted at Walugogo on the Iganga-Jinja highway,” he said. He said the windscreen of the pick-up which was carrying the detectives, got smashed, but nobody was injured. Ends
