THE Police have banned overnight parking of motor-vehicles at petrol stations, reports Felix Osike. The nationwide ban was slapped yesterday by Police Maj. Gen. Katumba Wamala and takes immediate effect. “This directive has been given after consultations with all oil companies and other stakeholders on the dangers that would befall the stations,” said the statement signed by the Public Relations Officer, Asuman Mugyenyi. It has been a common practice for motorists to park at petrol stations, which are considered secure from robbers. Security sources said the decision was taken following the September 11 terrorist attacks on the US. The General Manager Shell (U) Ltd. Ian Bromilow, said overnight parking at petrol stations was a bad practice. “I fully support the decision. It is a proactive safety measure,” he said. Local authorities have been requested to create alternative parking areas. All drivers of fuel tankers are also accordingly directed to park only in the areas designated by the Uganda Revenue Authority where security would be provided. URA’s Assistant Commissioner for Tax Education and Public Relations, Christopher Kaweesa, said, “For security reasons all oil tankers are expected to park at a customs designated place in Industrial Area.” He said other transit parking yards were available in Busia, Malaba, Mbale, Jinja, Mukono, Masaka and Ntungamo. All petrol station operators and local authorities have been requested to cooperate with the Police. Katumba also directed Police unit commanders throughout the country to immediately enforce the directive. Ends
