The National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) has set up measures to guard their installations against terrorist threats, reports Joseph Olanyo. This comes in a wake of fears that terrorists are targeting key national installations. Recently, fears of anthrax gripped the country. The NWSC Managing Director, Dr. William Muhairwe, yesterday said the measures arise from the ongoing international war against terrorism. He said all NWSC waterworks will be fenced off, starting with Ggaba 1 and Ggaba II, Entebbe and Jinja. He said the measures, passed by the NWSC board, were already being implemented in the above areas. “ Arising from the ongoing international crisis triggered by the world wide threats of terrorism, there is need to take precautionary measures to curb any threats to our installations. There are fears that the terrorists are targeting key national installations such as water and sewerage works,” he said. A letter from the board addressed to the Minister of Water, Lands and Environment, and copied to the State Minister for Security, the Director General ISO and Inspector General of police, said NWSC will increase security personnel at all key installations in the country and double the rate of testing water from three times to six times a week. Other measures include wearing identification badges and protective wear for staff who sort mail. “Since water is life and we are accountable to the public for their safety, we can not ignore these threats,” the letter said.
